Reading for Better Writing

Recently I had an interesting conversation with Joseph Stroud, a PhD student and regular at our Main Library, about classic works of literature. He made the very good point that many of the great 20th Century writers also held academic positions in fields such as linguistics and literature. We can turn to their works of fiction for lessons in writing.

Here are Joe’s recommendations for anyone who wants to improve their writing, with links to Bond Library’s holdings where possible, and Wikipedia for the author’s bios:

Tolkien, J.R.R.

Golding, W.

Lewis, C.S.

  • The Chronicles of Narnia

Maugham, W.S.

Orwell, G.

Joyce, J.

Steinbeck, J.
